So you’ve decided to upgrade your iPhone and want to trade your old one for some extra cash. Back Up Your Device
Before you start erasing the data, make sure you back up your old device unless you’re sure that you don’t need any of the information or photos. Otherwise, they’ll be gone after the reset.
Turn Off Find My iPhone
To disable this function, follow these steps:
- Open Settings
- Select Find My
- Select Find My Phone
- Toggle the switch to off this function
You might be wondering if you can leave this function on. Unfortunately, you cannot reset your phone unless this function is switched off.
Unpair Devices
If you’ve paired any devices like your Bluetooth earphones or Apple Watch, unpair them as well. You should also turn off iMessages.
Sign Out of Your Accounts
Chances are you’ve linked the Apple ID to your device. Make sure you sign out of it:
- Go to Settings
- Tap on your name
- Select Sign Out
You’ll be prompted for your Apple ID password and whether you want to maintain a copy of your data on this device. If you’ve made a backup or everything and are ready to erase the data, then you don’t need to toggle anything.
Erase Data
You should first remove the SIM card in your phone before performing the following steps:
- Open Settings
- Go to General
- Select Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Select Erase All Content and Settings
After a few minutes, your iPhone will restart. You will then see the welcome screen. This means the reset is completed. You’re not ready to sell, recycle or give your old phone to someone else.
