Before you trade your iPhone for cash, it’s essential to turn off the Find My iPhone function. Why is that important and why can’t you leave it on? We have your questions answered.

Why Should You Turn Off "Find My" When You Sell an iPhone?

The Find My app is an important security function on your iPhone. In the event your phone is misplaced or stolen, it will trigger an alarm as well as help you detect the location. From iOS 13 onwards, the Find My iPhone and Find My Friends feature has been combined into a single app.

Find My is critical to locating your lost phone and also a way to share your location with your family or friends. However, it is a function you need to disable before recycling or selling your phone. Here are the reasons why you should do so:

  • Without disabling the function, you will not be able to reset your device to its factory settings.
  • Anybody who has your Apple ID and password can track you by using the Find My app on iCloud.
  • When Find My is turned on, the Activation Lock is switched on, which means no one else can use it.

Thus, this is why you need to disable the Find My feature before trading in your phone. You can do so using the app or with iCloud.

Turning Off Find My iPhone

When you’re selling your phone to us, make sure you turn off the Find My iPhone function. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Open Settings
  • Tap on your name
  • Select Find My
  • Select Find My iPhone
  • Tap on the switch to disable the function
  • Enter your Apple ID password

That’s it! The Find My iPhone function is now disabled for your device. You can now restore your phone to its default settings:

  • Open Settings
  • Go to General
  • Select Reset
  • Select Erase All Content and Settings

However, it’s best to log out of iCloud before doing so. Once you have unlinked your iCloud account from your phone, the Activation Lock will no longer appear. Also, ensure you have made a backup of your device in case you wish to access any information.

How do you know that all the data on your phone has been deleted? If your phone restarts and prompts you to select things such as language and country - the usual setup you need to go through for new phones - it means the data has been deleted.

Remember, always disable the Find My feature on your iPhone, sign out of iCloud, and erase all data before you sell your device.
